Kettle River Brewing Kelowna
While BNA Brewing is the anchor of the Kelowna craft brewing scene, Kettle River brings it some much needed street cred. More akin to the Tofino Brewing, or Yellow Dog's of BC in its locale and vibe, Kettle Valley feels the industrial neighbourhood niche by making some nice beers in a building of exceptionally low pretence.
Red Light Ramen — Nelson, BC
There is no way that any Japanese person would have named their restaurant Red Light Ramen. The impossible mix of syllables would just be downright cruel (I can say this as I'm half Japanese and it is blatantly the truth); however, Red Light Ramen manages to capitalize on the noodle trend in a way that is almost way to cool for the Ramen traditionalist anyway.
Part and Parcel Victoria
While I have eaten here with kids and the whole family I tend to enjoy my time here alone. The bright space makes for good thinking over a nice meal. I like how there's no farm to table bullshit either. They do say their menu is handcrafted, which I can deal with. If this place is trendy they come by it honestly.
An Ode to Tsukiji
My first visit to Tsukiji was ill advised. I was 19 years old and had been living in Tokyo for two months. They say to visit Tsukiji on your first day or two in Japan as the jet lag will help with the early start to catch the early morning action in the market. My girlfriend at the time had just arrived in Japan and had never left Canada before. First thing the next morning we made it through the maze of subways to Tsukiji.
The combined aroma of every kind of fish and diesel fumes plus the commotion proved to be too much — she became instantly nauseous. Unfortunately for us inexperienced tourists Tsukiji was and continues to be an actual working fish market with real working fisherman bathrooms. Kneeling on the dirty wet floor whatever contents of the meal from her United Airlines flight the day before were let loose into the filthy recessed bowl in the floor.
Field House Brewing Abbotsford
After picking up some Fieldhouse IPA at Cask & Barrel in West Kelowna, I was curious about visiting the brewery. Their IPA was a standout in the dizzying array of IPA's that I've drank in the past year. A reasonable 5.5% alcohol and tempered hops flavour makes it smooth without feeling light — a refined taste.
Pullman Wine Bar Montreal
One of my longstanding favourite wine bars in Montreal, and probably all of Canada, is Bar Pullman near the Plateau area of Montreal's Centre Ville.
