Tivoli Gardens is likely one of the first sites you will encounter in Copenhagen, and allegedly the oldest operating theme park in the world. Opened in 1843, Tivoli Gardens is located next to the Copenhagen central station and is decidedly out of place in comparison to the clean cut Scandinavian architecture that surrounds it.
While Tivoli is strangely kitsch in a city that is known for its minimalist chic design, at Christmas the gardens shine and the holiday magic takes over. Warm twinkling lights, carousels and lovestruck couples wander in the night. Tivoli is also a great place to sample traditional Danish cuisine while you wander through the Christmas stalls. If you plan on spending longer book in at one of the many restaurants in the gardens.
If you find yourself in Copenhagen during the Christmas season, make this a special stop on your journey. It really is at its best during Christmas.
