Phil Gaimon Takes on Vancouver's Strava Community

In September 2018 I had the good fortune of filming and editing the Vancouver episodes of Phil Gaimon’s Worst Retirement Ever YouTube series with my friends from Velofix. It was as fun as it looks and thankfully I was not the one turning myself inside out climbing up mountains on a bicycle.

Chris Guillemet, CEO of Velofix, took to the e-bike cruiser to provide motivational tunes and cruise alongside Phil as he summited Cypress Mountain, Mount Seymour, and the paved road portion up to the Grouse Mountain Skyride gondola. In between we ate way too many chocolates and baked goods at Thomas Haas Patisserie in North Vancouver. Thomas, an avid and formidable cyclist in his own right, joined us for the Seymour climb.

For dinner after watching Phil exert himself we hit up Nook in Kitsilano, a great little Italian eatery in what is probably Vancouver’s quintessential oceanside neighbourhood. I didn’t earn most of the carbs I ate, but I will say that filming cycling does involve some exertion, although it is a totally different kind.

Day 2 involved coffee at Vancouver’s premiere cycling cafe Musette, and a leisurely cycle around UBC with a good group of guest riders keen to get a ride in with Phil. I have to say that the best part of my job is the people I work with. I am a decidedly behind the scenes kind of person, but I enjoy the camaraderie and collaboration that comes with making a production like this. As the shooter and editor I make many of my choices in motion while we’re shooting which streamlines the process for me. Unfortunately that also means I am the one who has to fix any mistakes, of which there are always a few.
